si assiste ad un crash bizzarro, che visto dalla nostra angolazione, marcia ed occidentale, suscita singolari accostamenti, nell’improbabile tentativo di render l’idea (un’idea che sia una…).

Flautista e polistrumentista (flauto traverso, piano Rhodes, sequencers, samplers, percussioni acustiche e midi, basso e chitarra elettrici), Dullsky, muove un percorso, che ingloba e digerisce, frammenti etnici, ambient di un’altra epoca, e jazz, in porzioni fusion, e lounge futuribile.
Le cinque lunghe composizioni di “Freedom Reflex (One)”, contengono interventi da parte di: Artem Pustovit, Barandash Karandashich, Alexander Tankeev, Ray Kondrashov, Olga Kondrashov, Oleg Apostol e Jana.
Non perfetto, per nulla, in alcuni passaggi eccessivo, eppure, (sarà per via della provenienza atipica) zampilla fresco e stimolante alle nostre orecchie, nel suo approccio stilistico, che più di un’insidia nasconde (per se stesso, e gli altri…).
Come rinchiudere nella stessa stanza virtuale, il compianto Jorge Reyes e Steve Roach, le composizioni di Artemiev per Tarkovskij, gli ambienti risuonanti di Paul Schütze, una certa angolazione nello sguardo, che avevamo riscontrato negli immensi ZGA (qualcuno li ricorda?…), le catastrofi, pianistico/percussive di Cecil Taylor, e la visione compositiva di Xenakis.
Reso l’idea?
Manco un poco credo, eppure, i risucchi e gli strappi, le sgroppate a rotta di collo, le pause, gli scarti improvvisi e le intrusioni digitali, ci parlano di puro talento.
Da affinare, da preservare, da giocare semmai in sottrazione (potrebbe tramutarsi in incubo vero altrimenti…).
In poche parole, da annusare e seguire con attenzione (in tutti i sensi…).

Dos años y medio después de la publicación del primer volumen de la serie, el año nuevo trajo la última entrega de la trilogía Psygnosis (se trata en realidad del segundo volumen y de esta manera está numerado), creada por el colectivo anónimo Idle Sunder en colaboración con el multiinstrumentista ruso Bogdan Dullsky (Quest.Room.Project) y publicada en su totalidad por el excelente netlabel belga Entity.

Algo más de dos horas y media para disfrutar de la enorme creatividad de este grupo y su bella e hipnótica abstracción musical.

«Famous russian experimentalist Bogdan Dullsky – responsible for the Quest Room Project – returns to test tube with a mixed-media release, to much of my own pleasure as I’m a big fan of his work. For this ‘Freedom Reflex | Second’ he invited some friends to collaborate, namely Barandash (the visual artist who created the amazing images that accompany this work); Nikita Golyshev (founder and curator of netlabel Musica Excentrica and musician) on samplers and synthesizers; Olliver Wichman (founder and curator of netlabel Petcord and musician) on piano, and also Ray Kondrashov on acoustic and midi percussions.

On this follow-up of a previous work, Bogdan and friends create a fantastic work of various levels in complexity, rendering the listener numb and dazzled. ‘Freedom Reflex | Second’ is, simply put, an audio-visual materialization of what life could have been in a concentration camp (one like KZ Mauthausen). Life on the edge, full of horrors, misfortune, sadness and agony, but also a life. What is life when you know it will eventually end, sooner than you think? What if you had to enjoy in the best possible way even knowing you would be eventually tortured and executed? What would fill your mind? What kind of pleasure would you try to take from those moments? What would you dream? Would you dream about Death? Despair? Freedom?

“Sharp dualism – opposition of spirit and matter”

Where are we? Between spirit and matter? I have stepped aboard the ship “Idle Sunder” to learn where we are… Anyway, I very much hoped for it. I was affably met by the captain and we have departed on this long trip named “Psygnosis”.

Two years have passed… Now I understand… That it’s not a children’s game… Is it a sect? Perhaps ;)…
All who participates in the project is united through one purpose… To learn the truth tensely and steadfastly peering through “dim bottle glass”…
To learn the world through feelings (music)? It is sometimes sick, sometimes it ennobles.
If you have dared to listen to it, keep in mind… that while it possesses a lot of pleasure, it also carries a lot of tears… a lot of disappointments… And, of course, eternal High… One on all… It is dominant… It seems to me, that I have spent in it one thousand years… Also it is ready to spend eternity in.
We became brothers in arms, have removed masks, have thrown it out to hell…. This world does not see itself without these attributes.
Join, by our ship there are places… It’ll only last for a short while.
“Immemorial quest between spirit and matter, eternal trip” is Psygnosis.

Bogdan Dullsky è nato in Siberia, vicino al lago Baikal. In seguito si è trasferito in Ucraina, Kiev, Odessa. Quando il padre, un pilota militare, era in guerra in Afghanistan ha vissuto nuovamente in Siberia in un villaggio cosacco. Poi in Polonia per un periodo di sei anni, poi in Georgia per circa un anno, poi ancora a Mosca. Ora vive in Moldavia. Bogdan non vive in un luogo per più di 3-4 anni, fin dall’infanzia, perchè con il padre ha viaggiato in guarnigioni militari, in tutto il mondo. Bogdan è un flautista eccezionale e polistrumentista. Nella musica di questo album coesistono moltissimi suoni strumentali e concreti che vanno e vengono continuamente, creando movimento e dinamicità uniche. Morfologia di un pensiero. Nikita Golyshev, known as CD-R, and Bogdan Dullsky (Quest.Room.Project) met virtually and have recorded an album. First, they share music file sources in the net, and then processed with real-time sound recordings through peer-to-peer connection.

The result is a collage of acoustic and digital pieces, gathered in one snowfall.

Having worked closely with Bogdan Dullsky (Quest.Room.Project – see NTT043) on this 1st album of the Psygnosis trilogy, Idle Sunder has transcended the space drone boundaries they were once confined to, to visit a universe of remarkably visual minimal rhythms and manipulated instruments/recordings.
All of the tracks contain a great diversity in both sound and style, while retaining a quite conceptual atmosphere which holds ground in between existential and psychological ideas that are sure to be elaborated on throughout the remainder of this project.

«A gentle flute motive introduces us to the world of Quest.Room.Project from Russia, and one might at first expect a relaxed listening experience. But by the time more voices chime in, it becomes obvious that these spotlights are going to be swallowed by shadows of tragic compassion. “Room Number – Fiducial Banality” is organised in 4 parts (one could as well define them as movements, because there are some key themes occuring throughout the entire release) and each of them features a room with distinct acoustic characteristics:
“The reason for the surfacing” appears like a shadow of a doubt that gradually turns into overwhelming certainty. Almost inaudible at the beginning, “Assemblage” soon escalates to several emotional outbursts, before exhaustion will take its tribute in “Possession” and create a haunted, threatening atmosphere. As reminiscence of the beginning, “Combined Exercises” begins with a flute solo and continues to pick up previous motives to escalate them to a wall of sound. Finally the dissonances wither away and make room for the last remnants of the ever occuring flute theme. A cycle has been completed and we are at the beginning again…
Bogdan Dullsky, the creative head behind the Quest.Room.Project, describes his intentions on the project’s website(http://dullsky.net/) as “a search of space for the life leaving for borders of habitual linearity”. «Here is a great example of the exceptional music you may find on the internet that you surely will never hear on the radio or stumble into during your everyday routine. Room Number: Fiducial Banality is released by the Test Tube netlabel and performed by Quest.Room.Project. This Russian ensemble creates walls of sounds that are both aesthetically pleasing and sensually over-powering. “The Reason For The Surfacing” is my favorite track and features a solo flute that floats over the intense electronic arrangement only to be slowly enveloped in it. It is often hard to determine how much of QRP’s instrumention is acoustic or electronic. “Assemblage” is somewhat industrial while “Possession” is almost meditative. This is unique music that stays with you.»
